Jason Culbertson Early Years
Jason Culbertson began his martial arts studies over 30 years ago at the age of 12 under the late Grandmaster Daniel K. Pai. He also spent time studying Thai Boxing, Hsing I, Aikido, and American Karate.
Tai Chi
While in college during the early 90’s Jason was fortunate to meet his Yang Taiji instructor, Sifu Joseph Cavallaro. Sifu Cavallaro shared a wealth of knowledge of the Internal Martial Arts with Jason and has been a huge impact on his career. To this day Jason remains a student of Taiji and is continuously furthering his studies with Sifu Cavallaro.
Multi-Culture Martial Arts Academy
After graduating from NCSU with a B.A. in Philosophy Jason moved to California seeking out a hotspot for Martial Arts. It’s here where Jason began his studies with martial arts hall of famer Guru Guy Chase at San Francisco’s Multi-Culture Martial Arts Academy (Now the Guy Chase Academy of Martial Arts).
In the early 80’s Guru Chase was invited by Dan Inosanto himself to become a full time core apprentice and live in student at the world renowned Inosanto Academy. For about a decade Guru Chase trained and instructed at the legendary academy.
Under the direct tutelage of Guru Chase, Jason learned the arts that Guru Chase was fortunate enough to learn directly from the masters themselves. Jason studied Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do, Inosanto LeCosta Kali/Escrima, Pencak Silat, Muay Thai, Professor Salem Assli’s Savate, Karl Gotch’s Catch Wrestling, LucayLucay Panatukan, and went on to teach these for Guru Chase.
Due to his involvement with Guru Chase, Jason was fortunate to be able to train regularly with the likes of the late Pendekar Herman Suwanda in Mande Muda Silat, Ben Largusa the late Grandmaster of the Villabrille Largusa Kali system, Ernie Franco, and former MMA fighter and Coach Frederic Belleton.
Raleigh Martial Arts Academy
After having spent numerous years in Thailand where Jason continued his Muay Thai training and spreading the arts of Jeet Kune Do, Kali/Escrima, Pencak Silat, and Yang Taiji he has returned to the Raleigh area, opened the Raleigh Martial Arts Academy, and is dedicated to sharing his knowledge and bringing you quality instruction.
Jason is also the instructor that brought Raleigh the “Open Internal Challenge”. A free community forum held every Saturday for Internal Martial Artists to test their abilities and share their knowledge with practitioners of differing backgrounds.
